Ben and Emily went trick or treating on Halloween dressed as the Big Bad Wolf and Little Red Riding Hood. This year was special because it was the first year Ben was able to WALK from house to house and collect candy. You can see a video of Ben walking up a driveway to collect candy below. Please ignore the very large man in the elf costume!
We’ve written a lot in the last year about Ben being able to walk. The act of Ben walking has been the result of intensive therapy at United Cerebral Palsy and the combination of a lot of things: Braces for his feet and ankles so he has a steady base; leg and core strength so he can stand up and move his legs; arm strength so he can hold on to an adult hand for balance; and the neurological development to put it all together.
But to prepare for Halloween, the great people at UCP actually worked with Ben (and other kids) on the fine motor skills of using his hand to grasp a piece of candy and place it in his bucket. This amazingly simple task, something that millions of kids do every day with ease, requires physical training and practice for children like Benjamin. But the result was great to see and experience, and Diane, who loves Halloween more than most normal people should, got to take BOTH of her kids trick or treating on Halloween.
